About Sustainable Design

By kirsten

The available options for design and materials vary widely depending on the experience of an architectural firm and the circumstances of an individual project. Even if you choose not to plug into a photovoltaic array or a backyard wind turbine, smart choices in many other areas allow you to make significant gains. Consider using recycled and nontoxic materials, solar or passive water heaters, efficient insulation, and a trustworthy thermostat. Because many of these measures involve whole-house systems, it's essential for you to establish criteria (link to Eco-Build) that addresses them.

We invite you to share your thoughts on sustainable lifestyles.

To get started, tell us more about site selection. I have a desire for the serenity of the rural areas, but enjoy the urban culture and community. But sometimes the noise and pollution are overwhelming. How can I analyze the best place to build?

  2. I am new to blogging, so I feel like I am in the “just taking notes” phase. But when I do find a blog topic I like, I do comment because I genuinely like what has been said or the information was helpful to me. I am officially linked to your blog now, so I will be checking in often! Thanks for all the great advice.

  3. Keep up the great writing.

    Amy,
Thanks for your interest. We are an Architectural office working in Southern California and the Wasatch Front and Back areas of Utah. Currently we are designing modest sized green and sustainable projects for the San Diego Market, a new single family dwelling in Utah and 3 restaurant remodels. Our design approach is applying sustainable design practices for the building process, construction, maintenance and business model. We will have some new photos posted in the few days of some of the new projects.

Solar panels, in my eyes, are one of the best investments a home owner could make due to them lasting for many years and producing energy for as long as they last. The price of electricity will only go up so solar panels will only become a better investment. Have found some useful tips about buying Solar Panels and I will use them when I purchase panels myself.

  10. Hi there may I use some of the insight here in this post if I provide a link back to your site?

  11. Greetings I recently finished reading through by way of your website and I am truly satisfied. I actually do possess a couple of questions to suit your needs on the other hand. You think you’re considering conducting a follow up write-up about this? Do you consider you could be planning to retain changing as well? In addition for those who have a chance are you going to charge the site flexible solar panels if you get a chance?

I would like to add something for people who are into protecting our earth and environment. Now, with all the global issues that we have to embrace into our lives and our childrens lives, we should all do our part to help a least a little bit. Why not Eliminate your Electrical Bill and Save Thousands a year with Solar Panels for your Home, they are extremely easy to build and this will be an easy way for you to do your part in helping our planet and save a tonne of money at the same time. Think about it.

Hi Jamie, Kent uses many recycled materials in his designs. The recycled glass counter tops used in the Lake Street home are real gems!

  19. Tim says:

It’s past time to stop using foreign oil! Maybe we will always need some oil, but we just have to stop depending on Middle East oil. There are 3 fairly easy things that all of us can do now to make a difference. 1- Stop pumping gas into your car! If you have a gas guzzler now, convert it into an electric car (see this blueprint for example). No more gas! 2- Stop using electricity off the electric grid! Either build solar panels (like this one), or build a cheap magnetic generator (like this one). Not very hard! 3- Learn to bike or walk! If you are only going a mile to the shop, walk or bike there. My 2 cents.
